Pavlovsk
Pavlovsk Palace is not just a single building; it’s a grand estate that includes a massive palace, expansive gardens, and various smaller structures. It's located about 30 kilometers south of St. Petersburg, making it an easy day trip from the city.
The palace complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which means it’s recognized internationally for its cultural significance. It’s a popular place for both tourists and locals, offering a mix of historical exploration and peaceful nature experiences. The sheer scale of the estate is impressive, making you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

The History of Pavlovsk

Catherine the Great originally gifted the land to her son, Paul, as a wedding present. Paul, later Tsar Paul I, and his wife, Maria Feodorovna, oversaw the construction and design of the palace and grounds, which took many years to complete.

They both took a very active role in the interior design and landscaping of the grounds, which gives it a very personal touch, particularly for the time it was created. Unlike other grand palaces of the era, Pavlovsk was more of a personal retreat for the couple rather than a place for lavish displays of wealth. During World War II, German forces occupied Pavlovsk, causing significant damage and looting. After the war, a massive restoration effort began, using old photographs and drawings to bring the palace and park back to their former glory. The palace was turned into a museum, with a very strong emphasis on how the royals lived and spent their time.

For Tourists

Inside the palace, you can see the grand state rooms, private apartments, and formal halls, all decorated with precious antiques and works of art. Make sure you check out the Greek Hall, the Italian Hall and the Egyptian Vestibule. You can also see Maria Feodorovna's collection of decorative arts, including her many embroidery pieces. In the park, you can explore the various architectural features, including colonnades, temples and bridges. A lot of the landscape of the park is inspired by English Gardens and landscapes. Look out for the Rose Pavilion, which is a great place for photos. You can also rent bicycles to cycle through the park, or simply sit down on one of the many benches and appreciate the nature. Various cultural events, such as classical music concerts, are held there during summer. Guided tours are available, which provide a more in-depth history and background of the palace.
